First demonstration trials bring REED MaaS vision to the shop floor at WWR
The REED project has reached a major milestone with the completion of the first demonstration activities at WWR, IDEKO carried out a series of industrial trials between 22 and 24 September 2026. These tests mark the beginning of the Demonstration Work Package, representing the final phase of the project in which the ambitious objectives of the REED Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform will be validated in a real industrial environment.
During the three-day campaign, IDEKO’s team deployed and evaluated several of the key technologies developed throughout the project while manufacturing a tappet plate component for the metal forming industry. The demonstration provided the ideal opportunity to assess how advanced process optimisation, intelligent tooling and monitoring technologies can be integrated into a real production environment while maintaining the stringent productivity and quality requirements of industrial manufacturing.

Putting REED technologies to the test
The campaign focused on three strategic objectives that directly support the REED vision of responsive manufacturing: reducing machining time, increasing process stability, and deploying advanced monitoring capabilities for tool condition assessment. The industrial trials included the evaluation of alternative machining strategies for roughing and finishing operations, the validation of an advanced damped cutting tool, and the deployment of a tool breakage detection system for long-term process monitoring.
Promising early results
Although the detailed analysis of the data is still ongoing, the first observations from the industrial trials are highly encouraging. The tests showed significant potential to improve productivity through modifications to the machining strategy while also validating the benefits of the advanced damped cutting technology.
The results obtained during the campaign suggest a strong potential to achieve the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) established within the REED project. These initial
findings provide confidence that the technological building blocks developed during the project can deliver tangible benefits when deployed through the REED MaaS ecosystem in real manufacturing scenarios.
Entering the final stretch of REED
The completion of the WWR demonstration campaign marks the transition from technology development to industrial validation. After the first stage of research and development, the REED consortium is now entering the project's final stretch, where the technologies, services and digital capabilities developed within the project will be evaluated against demanding industrial use cases.

The coming months will be dedicated to analysing the data collected during the trials, refining the deployed solutions and continuing the demonstration activities necessary to validate the REED MaaS platform. IDEKO will continue to play an active role in this process contributing its expertise in machining process and monitoring technologies. The knowledge generated during these industrial campaigns will be instrumental in proving how responsive, data-driven and service-oriented manufacturing models can help European industry increase productivity, resilience and competitiveness.
